The Black Russian Terriers is a relativly new breed, it was developed by the State owned RED STAR kennel in Russia as a working dog for the Russian Army. The goal was a large, strong, high spirited all round dog with a stable temperament able to withstand the dramatic climatic differences in Russia and always willing to work. They crossed Giant Schnauzer, Airedale, Rottweiler, as the starting point and then added more breeds as they progressed. Newfoundland, Moscow Watch Dog and others, it is thought that all together about 20 breeds went into the development of the BRT. |

| After WW2nd the breeding program was stepped up and the result was the BRT who was stable in temperament and character, but not type. Several years later the breeders from DOSAAF, a paramilitary section, bought dogs from RED STAR and standardized the type while still retaining the good qualities of temperament and character. The breed slowly over a number of years was released into the general public and in May 1984 was recognized by the FCI with Standard # 327 "Black Russian Terrier". |

The BRT is a natural working dog, protective without undue aggression, controllable, easy to train, loves to work or be the center of attention in the show ring, loves kids and gets on well with other animals. The BRT in Europe has adapted to apartment living and, although no longer bred as a super man stopper, is loyal, intelligent, disciplined and if the need arises can, and will still do the job. |
||||
| There are many stories on the Web of BRT who without training have saved their owners from nasty situations, some even losing their own life in the process. The BRT is an excellent tracker and schutzhund, agility and obedience trials are a joy to this dog. The draw backs are that the BRT is a house dog and does not do well if kenneled, they must live as part of your family, and must be socialized from the start to new people and situations. Basic obedience is a must as they will grow into a large strong dog and you must be the boss so there is no dominance problems as they mature, firm gentle training is the way to do this and the BRT is eager to learn and please you. |
